YPP!PPY was composed for the occasion of the 60th birthday of my former teacher Younghi Pagh-Paan. The Piece begins with the instruments playing short phrases based on her name in two forms - Younghi Pagh-Paan, Pagh-Pann Younghi and then continuing with a composed improvisation over a recording of her first name time-stretched over the duration of the piece. Each instrument plays somewhat independently of the others in that the metrical structure of the piece only coincides every 20 seconds - at which point the performers shout out "BA!" into the performance space. In practice these points are never quite together - or rather they form a kind of "Korean unison".
